Abstract
This study explores levels of recognition of Lunfardo lexicon among a sample of speakers from the Río de la Plata region, in Argentina. In order to examine to what extent these speakers are able to recognize Lunfardo expressions, a word recognition test was designed using fragments of authentic texts from three different genres relevants to the history of Lunfardo: short stories, tango lyrics and national rock song lyrics. In addition, the data collected were analyzed taking into consideration sociolinguistic factors such as age, gender, place of residence, family background and level of education. The results indicate that many participants in this study recognized words that belong to the Lunfardo lexicon. Terms included in the test that elicited both high and low levels of recognition were identified as well.Downloads
