Abstract
The article explores the ambiguity between the anti-system discourse appropriated by the far-right and the articulation of narratives of hatred and opposition to government policies aimed at promoting social equity. To do so, it examines the speech delivered by Jair Messias Bolsonaro, then President of the Federative Republic of Brazil, on September 7, 2021, on Avenida Paulista in São Paulo. The research is based on linguistic analysis of discourse and argumentation (Verón 1987, Charaudeau 2009), adopting a critical and ethnographic perspective. The study identified that Bolsonaro’s discourse employs argumentative strategies that describe a catastrophic scenario that, according to him, prevents him from governing. Furthermore, he uses a discourse against the system, which he associates with his enemies —the democratic institutions— while paradoxically producing a narrative of hatred against policies aimed at promoting social equality.Downloads
