Abstract

Public transport systems by means such as tram and light rail, have a long history and development in various regions of the world, showing multiple benefits in the environmental, social and economic areas; at the same time, its implementation is an issue that is still under discussion in the countries and cities of Latin America, where these systems begin their incursion. The purpose of this paper is to formulate the arguments that point to tram systems as a feasible means of transport in Latin American cities. For this purpose, its origin and actuality are studied; a critical reflection of its contribution to sustainable urban mobility in contrast to other means of transport, and its relation to the management of cities is made; also, a proposal for a light rail line on Avenida Carrera 7ª in the city of Bogotá D.C., Colombia, is developed, based on the analysis of operational and mobility aspects in contrast to the current transport system. It concludes the need for greater inclusion of tramway systems in national plans, projects and programs; also, the applicability of these systems in the models of sustainable urban public transport in Latin American cities.
