United Nations legal instruments on road safety in the region of the Americas

Abstract

The United Nations General Assembly, through Resolution A/RES/74/299/2020, recommends that Member States become Contracting Parties through accession to the following United Nations legal instruments on road safety: 1949 Convention on Road Traffic (1949 CRT); 1968 Convention on Road Traffic (1968 CRT); 1968 Convention on Road Signs and Signals (1968 CRSS); 1958 and 1998 Agreements on Technical Vehicle Regulations (1958 ATVR and 1998 AGTR); 1997 Agreement on Periodic Technical Inspection of Vehicles (1997 ATIV); and the 1957 Agreement on the Transport of Dangerous Goods (1957 ADR). In the region of the Americas, the Contracting Parties, by legal instrument, are: 1949 CRT: Argentina, Barbados, Canada, Chile, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guatemala, Haiti, Jamaica, Paraguay, Peru, Trinidad and Tobago, United States and Venezuela; 1968 CRT: Bahamas, Brazil, Cuba, Guyana, Honduras, Peru and Uruguay; 1968 CRSS: Chile, Cuba and Guyana; 1998 AGTR: Canada and United States. No Contracting Parties to the 1958 ATVR, 1997 ATIV and 1957 ADR Agreements were identified. Accession to United Nations legal instruments is necessary to promote and facilitate international road traffic in the region of the Americas, contributing to the improvement of road safety.
