Pars construens. The solution of Abelard to the Problem of Universals in the First Part of the Logica “Ingredientibus”
Abstract
In this second part of the analysis of the Abeldian contribution to the problem of universals in the text of the Logica Ingredientibus, the cause communis and similitudo communis are examined. The former is at the basis of the capacity of signification of the universal, while the latter is at the basis of its cognitive capacity. Furthermore, after presenting the basis of the common character of the universal and of the abstract and intellectual faculties, the multiple meanings of the universal are addressed, which are the basis of the Abelardian response to the questions posed by Porphyry.
