Paulo Freire and the anti-colonial contributions of Frantz Fanon, Albert Memmi and Amílcar Cabral

Abstract

In this article I analyze the dimension of “the political” in Freirean pedagogy, so I focus on the theoretical contributions of three anti-colonial intellectuals: Frantz Fanon, Albert Memmi and Amílcar Cabral. The political narratives of them had a preponderant influence on the writing of Paulo Freire. I place my analysis in the period of exile of Paulo Freire (1964-1982), at which time he has a prolific intellectual production, while actively participating in the debates and revolutions of the Latin American, Caribbean and African peoples. So, I am interested in highlighting in this writing the political influences of your thoughts on Freirean theory. With respect to Fanon, I place the epistemic and racial political aspect, that is, the categories that he provides to Freire, referring to “dual consciousness”, “the racial” and “decolonization”; in relation to Memmi I present the problem of “dehumanization” of the colonizadx; As for Amílcar Cabral, I refer to his anticolonial position and his idea of “decolonization of minds” and “cultural resistance”. These categories allowed Freire to reformulate his initial presuppositions on liberation and propose a pedagogy “with” the oppressed.
