Abstract

The aim of this paper is to analyze the context during 1869-1872 when the central government attempted to carry out the military conquest of the Southern Indian Territory established by Law 215, issued in 1867. An overview of the discussions taken place around war conduct and the resistance of ethnic leaders are presented. It integrates two main border areas on which the conquest was expected: the southern border of Córdoba, Mendoza and San Luis and Buenos Aires and the strategies of the indigenous groups closer to these spaces: the ranqueles and the salineros.
