Mary Peabody Mann, remitente. Amistad y utopías con Domingo Sarmiento y Juana Manso

Abstract

In this article we propose to revisit the figure of Mary Peabody Mann through the epistolary exchange with Domingo Sarmiento and Juana Manso, where her figure stands out and, at the same time, is reflected in them. This double movement uncovers a web of affective, cultural and educational ties that build a friendship refractory to the “phallogocentric” exclusivity of the hegemonic discourses on this bond from Aristotle to Nietzsche, as Jacques Derrida has observed in Politics of Friendship (1998). We are interested since this scheme finds its climax in the fraternization of modern democrats represented by the republican model derived from the French Revolution, the premises are present in the ideology of the three educators. So, at the epicenter of this scheme, the relationship built in the heat of correspondence gives an exceptional and paradigmatic result, while pointing to a bright spot in the incipient demand for gender equality in Argentina.
