Abstract

This article analyses the making of a discourse regarding science by different catholic actors in the 1870’s Argentina. The research is focused on the catholic periodical La América del Sud (1876-1880), which may be considered as one the main catholic organs of this period. The aforementioned topic is approached taking three issues into consideration: in the first place, the problematic of the catholic views regarding science is analyzed in the context of the contemporary disputes between catholics and anticlericals; secondly, these debates are inscribed in the larger picture conformed by the confrontations that were taking place in Europe and the United States over the character of the relation between religion and science; finally, the convergence –or divergence- between the ideas expressed by La América del Sud and those expressed by the Archbishopric of Buenos Aires is observed.
