Abstract

Written from the perspective of Brazilian and Argentine publishers, this article offers an ethnography of the international editorial relationships envisioned within the space of the Frankfurt book fair. It also seeks to uncover and analyze various determining factors of the international circulation of books and ideas. Beyond proclamations of common sense, it is crucial to understand how the growing concentration of capital operates in the world of books and what effects this process produces on both peripheral markets and cultures. Far from responding just to purely economic factors or to the inevitable trends of globalization, any explanation of changes in this particular cultural market must also reveal the symbolic and historical dimensions and forces of this process, among which one must highlight the nation-centered legitimation of the politics of this sector.
