Sexual and social differentiation: their role in the morphological variations of portray scenes at Theban Tomb 49, Egypt
Abstract
On the wall decoration of Theban Tomb 49, its owner, Neferhotep, is represented together with other social actors displaying different activities during his earthly life and in his posthumous projection. It is expected that some of these visual expressions are very similar to reality, while others fit a potential recreation of future situations, once Neferhotep was dead. We wonder if there is any kind of differentiation in the shape of the representations that allows identifying the portrayed people individually or if the social groups involved in burial rituals are the focus of the paintings. Our aim is to evaluate the existence of shape variations in portrayed people profiles, according to previous geometric morphometric analyses that showed the existence of sex and rank and/or status shape differences. Here we are interested in assessing the interaction of both variables and the relative importance of sex (determined through of physiognomy) in morphological variations of male and female portrays.Downloads
